By Dr. Laura Thompson Nuke it. Box it. Can it. Irradiate it. Bleach it. Our dead food was once alive. What are we doing to ourselves --- our children? Our food is damaged by heat and processing. This means the essential nutrients are denatured or destroyed. These nutrients are the vitamins, minerals, amino acids, fatty acids, and enzymes that create our cells, tissues, and organs. This is science; this is human biology. What happens when food is processed? It can sit on a shelf in a box, can, or bag, and remain neutral. It is not worth eating. It is enzyme-depleted. If it doesn’t mold or deteriorate, it has no life. It is in effect, dead. How can we possibly expect to create vibrant, healthy life with dead food? How can we create healthy and exuberant children with dead food? Remember, our bodies are made from the food we eat, and the ability of our digestive systems to break it down and absorb it. Which would you choose … life or death? Simple answer. If you choose to have more life in your life, take digestive enzymes. They are a must today to spark metabolism and energy production. Enzymes are a necessary digestive aid. Did you know that over half of the surgeries in this country are digestive in nature ---- and that many diseases are rooted in the digestive tract? Common conditions resulting from impaired digestion are constipation, hemorrhoids, acid reflux, diverticulitis, Crohn’s disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and colon cancer. One of the causes may be a serious depletion of enzymes in our food supply, and the sluggishness of our digestive systems that results. Who do I recommend take digestive enzymes? I recommend enzymes to all the people I see in my practice – those who have digestive health concerns and those who don’t. It‘s important to remember that without these life-giving substances, we may not be absorbing the nutrients from our food. Nutrient depletion and malnourishment are terms not often applied to the populations of industrialized countries. This is what we are seeing in today’s children, a generation who have been brought up on nutrient and enzyme-depleted food. Obesity is at 25%. High cholesterol levels, asthma, cancer and Attention Deficit Disorders are extremely prevalent. In my practice, I see many children. I suggest digestive enzymes for all of them. Given in capsule form, they can help with food and environmental allergies, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, yeast problems, and protein and fat metabolism. Generally most children aren't terribly aware of their digestive systems unless they feel pain. Children have digestive symptoms like "stomach aches", gas, cramping, mucus formation, constipation or diarrhea. (Digestive disorders account for ¼ of all school absences in the state of California.) Their behavior and emotions are affected by the pain, discomfort, and malabsorption of nutrients that result from these digestive difficulties. Interestingly, their parents notice a decrease in the hyperactivity, insomnia, irritability, depression and mood swings when they incorporate enzymes into their meals daily. They act as if it’s miraculous. It’s really not. It’s normal! It’s time to put more life in our lives!
